Microsoft has announced Halo 2 will be ported to the PC. But, what many sites seem to be missing is the larger pitcher. Halo 2 will ONLY run on the new Microsoft OS Vista (which doesn't even have a real release date yet). For the computer gaming community, we haven't seen the likes of this since games went from DOS to Windows. For the longest time, it generally didn't matter if you had win98, 2000, or XP. You pretty much knew, if you had the processing power, all was good. And so it begins again...
Gaming companies will now have to decide:
1) Release a "better" game exclusively on Vista, but know that its clientele will be smaller because sales for Vista are expected to be slow.
2) Assuming Vista will handle backwards compatibleness better then Windows/DOS, companies could opt just to stick with the usual format for a while.
3) Say, "screw this", and develop for a console.
Given that game companies aren't even allowed to see how development will work on Vista at this point, it seems option 2 will be the logical choice for a while. My expectation is that this will hurt Halo 2 PC sales... Unless they plan on bundling it with Vista!
