Spiritual Successor

Spiritual successors or sequels are a thing of beauty for any gamer that loves a good story line. In a nutshell, its how Designers (often the original writers) get around all the red tape of licensing. Publishers have a bad reputation for killing a good storyline, scaring away good/original storywriters, and sitting on legacy trademarks (Duke Nukem, LucasArts, etc). True the names need to be different, but the storyline can continue. This does pose a challenge of looking like a nockoff, but having the original writer often helps to prevent this. Regardless, I don't think a "Joe Nukem" or "Chateau Wolfenstein" would do very well.

E3 has been highlighting great upcoming spiritual successors. BioShock will continue the story of System Shock, while Crysis will continue FarCry. These sequels give us hope, that we may some day see another Full Throttle, or Star Control.

Editors Note: Forgot to list "Supreme Commander" continuing the RTS "Total Annihilation".
