Return of the Letter 'W'

So what is with game titles these days? It seems like everyone needs at least one word to begin with the letter 'W'. When typing game titles in this blog, its my habit to use an acronym after using the full name once. Additionally, these days, when I need to Google info on a game, I can simply Google just the game's acronym to successfully find it.

So why the 'W'? Considered generally as an unused letter of the alphabet, or a 4 pointer to Scrabble fans.

I'd say it narrows down to the lack of creativity by the publishers and/or Developers. Their stuck on the words: "World" and "War". Come now, we know your game is about war by the beat up dude with a gun on the front cover. Move on.

Some guilty are: CoD:WaW, WiC, WoW, DoW:W40K, WoG, GoW, GRAW. Fortunatly, none of those go for the double douce, World War II.

This really reflects the state of gaming, and the lack of anything new. Even indie developer, World of Goo, couldn't shake the mighty W. Then again, the game was basically Lemmings, with a new paint job.

I will have to give some kudos to Company of Heroes (CoH), which is a WWII game that didn't find the need to stick W in its title.
