Gamespy ran their "Most Wanted Games of 2007" last week. This is a time, when the editors aim for the most highly anticipated titles in the year. In my usual fashion, I have compiled a list counting the titles per platform, based on this Gamespy list (last years 2006 list). I predicted 2007 to be the year of the console. The War between PS3, Wii, and X360 is in full force, so the titles this year are expected to be strong. Meanwhile the lowly PC will finally gets a new version of DirectX this year, launching it into a new generation. Meaning, PCs shouldn't see apps heavily using DirectX 10 this year. Hence, 2007 should be the year for consoles, Right. Check out the break down...
PC - 22
X360 - 20
PS3 - 16
Wii - 4
PS2 - 4
DS - 4
PSP - 1
Observations -
~ PCs have the most wanted games for 2007!
~ The PC is continuing to have the same titles as the X360, showing the strong-arming that Microsoft has between the 2 platforms and the publishers that make the games.
~ 4 games for the Wii!?! You've got to be kidding me! That's the same number as the retiring PS2. The Wii is out selling the PS3 right now, but their novelty controls are gonna die off real quick if they don't get any titles. People are already E-baying old games because the're board of the titles already. Based off this list, it would seem the Wii is more of a toy, then a gaming platform. In defense, it very well may take developers to 2008 just to figure out what works best for the platform.
NOTE: IGN also had a top 100 games of 2007, but the list was an editing disaster and just plain sloppy. In some cases the game listed came out in 2006. In other cases, the title was listed twice for different platforms. While some platforms were left off completely (Bioshock #8 of 100 for X360, yet PC not on the list). For these reason, I'm opting to toss out their source.
