IGN hinted once again that Starcraft 2 could be in the works at Blizzard. But while many RTS fans have been drooling over such possibilities, the question really needs to be raised: In 2008 will we really need another Sci-fi RTS?
Awhile back, I talked about how I don't mind playing multiple RTS at the same time, just as long as they come from different genera. Looking at the line up, for RTS's, it just seems Starcraft would have a heck of a time standing out, aside from its storyline. Warhammer 40k has already hinted at something new for 2007, plus its current game is going strong. Then in 2007 we'll have Supreme Commander that we hope will be the next big Sci-fi RTS. Then there's the new C&C, that will have aliens as a new race. Geez, more Sci-fi, I'm still holding on to the 3rd expansion of Dawn of War. Some day I may even try to roll back to the Star Wars RTS. Wait, did I mention Supreme Commander in 2007...sorry Empire at War.
I'm just a a bit concerned Starcraft 2 will end up like a Duke Nuke'm Forever, Warcraft 3 or Doom 3, where the players say, "okay ...and this is new how?"
UPDATE: Sins of a Solar Empire is another notable Sci-fi RTS in 2007. Plus, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) will be in C&C 3.
